The kids fishing camp is a camp that Blackfly Lodge offers each summer. This summer my son and I were lucky enough to go and what an experience it was! The lodge is located on the island of Abaco in the northern Bahamas in a development called Schooner Bay which happens to have some of the nicest beaches in the Abaco’s. Make sure to check them out while you’re there.
Everything about the camp, lodge and location immensely exceeded my expectations. We hand-lined for fish the old-school, Bahamian way, progressed to spin fishing for bones and then graduated to fly fishing. We learned from Justin Lewis at the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust about the Bonefish habitat and how to properly handle them, we learned how to tie our own flies and, of course, how to properly double-haul (cast). We even spent an afternoon swimming in a freshwater, blue hole in the middle of a forest!
The education, amenities, hospitality, incredible food, outstanding guides and world-class fishing made it a trip my son and I will never forget. If you are looking for something unique and your child has a passion for fishing make sure to visit the Blackfly Lodge kids fishing camp!
