Schooner Bay Beach

Abaco, Bahamas

I had a chance to visit Schooner Bay while staying at Blackfly Lodge for a father/son fishing trip and I was blown away by how beautiful it was.  If you look at a map of Abaco in the Bahamas, the development of Schooner Bay lies way to the south — pretty much, in the middle of nowhere.  Initially, I thought this would be a negative since all the “action” in this part of the Bahamas takes place to the north, but I was pleasantly mistaken.  Schooner Bay offers great home rentals, two great lodges, fishing guides, biking, fishing, two amazing beaches and is a 35 minute drive to Marsh Harbor and a shorter drive to the beautiful, Abaco Club at Winding Bay for more activities including world-class, golf.

SO MUCH POTENTIAL

Schooner Bay Resort was developed recently and has all the best infrastructure in place.  I would guess that it’s probably 10-15% build-out and also includes the Sandpiper Inn and the legendary, Blackfly Lodge fishing destination.

Schooner Bay has two, main beaches.  The first one is what I call, “Schooner Bay Beach” and the other is what I call “Schooner Bay Lagoon Beach” (I’m not sure if they have official names).  This post describes the Schooner Bay beach.

AMAZING CABANA

As you ride your bike or golf cart to the beach (cars aren’t allowed), you first arrive at an awesome beach cabana.  The cabana is used for catered events or a relaxing place to read a book.  There is a restroom and shower as well.  Once you walk through the cabana, you’ll walk through a path to the gorgeous beach.  The beach has two wooden, thatched, sun shades with a couple of comfortable, lounge chairs underneath.  They are perfect for napping or daydreaming as you stare at the epic water.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL

The water is crystal-clear and the sand is probably the best I’ve ever seen.  It’s clean and soft with a light tan/pinkish color.  The water is great for snorkeling and there’s a reef all around.  As you walk to the north (away from the marina entrance) the water will become a little more wavy and rough.  You also will, likely, have the beach all to yourself which is pretty amazing — especially, for a destination that is only a short, 40 min flight from Ft. Lauderdale or West Palm Beach!

If you ever are on Abaco, make sure to take a visit to Schooner Bay to check it out and visit it’s amazing beaches!
