One of the biggest headaches when trailering a boat is inevitably, losing the tag/license plate. This normally occurs because boat trailers come with weak, plastic tag holders. After numerous trips to the boat ramp the tag inevitably, breaks off.
Past Solutions
Past solutions to this problem have been to either strengthen the plate bracket, bolt the tag directly to the trailer or mount it high on the guide post. Regardless, I’ve rarely seen a plate bracket that lasts. It’s a hassle to bolt the tag to the trailer or wheel well. Also, having a license plate extending from the top of the guide post often creates other issues when reloading the boat back on the trailer.
Inside Rear Window
When I bought my HEWES REDFISHER 18 I was told to place the trailer tag inside the rear window of my 4Runner. The logic was that it would be protected and still visible. While that is true, I also have tinted windows like most vehicles and it’s kind of difficult to see the tag easily. Consequently, being unnecessarily pulled over by the police was a real risk.

New Solution
To fix the problem, I thought it would make sense to utilize a magnetic plate holder like the ones car dealers use for test drives. After a quick search on Amazon, I found exactly what I was looking for. The product consisted of a set of two rubber-coated magnets specifically, designed to hold a license plate. I read the reviews (it was highly rated) and made the purchase. It cost me $26.
So far, so good. It seems to work perfectly. In addition, when I park at the ramp I take the plate off and store it inside for safety.
