Wekiva Island is a surprisingly unique and fantastic place in the Orlando area.  Here’s what makes it so special.

LANDLOCKED BEACH VIBE

As I drove through a suburb of Orlando called Longwood I felt more like I was in Georgia than Florida. Upon entering the gate at the end of an unassuming street I was blown away by how cool this place is.  Beyond the parking lot I could see sunbathers, people kayaking the river and swimming, people enjoying drinks, and live music at the bar as well as food at the cafe.  I was excited to check it out!

THE BEST FLORIDA SPRINGS TO VISIT BY BOAT

PADDLING DESTINATION

Wekiva Island is a hub of activity that includes Kayak and SUP rentals, swimming, volleyball, fishing and more. Paddleboard Orlando operates from here and the rivers are some of the most beautiful in Florida.  Although the water at Wekiva Island isn’t clear, you can find crystal clear water further up the river towards Wekiva Springs.

THE RIVER

The Wekiva River originates one mile upstream at Wekiva Springs State Park. Rock Springs Run originates at Rock Springs in Kelly Park eight miles away. You can rent kayaks or canoe down the river via Kings Landing. Wekiva Island is located where these two rivers meet. The result is refreshing, 72 degree, fresh water that flows past this location year round, making it a perfect place to cool off during a hot day. During a busy summer day it’s common to see hundreds of people floating on rafts, swimming and enjoying the beautiful river.

“OLD FLORIDA” FEEL

Yet again, this area is like a step back in time. Both rivers are beautiful and have abundant wildlife along the banks.  In addition, the foliage and landscape are amazing.  It is a great place to enjoy “Old Florida” and it’s incredible that it’s so close to all the theme parks.
