Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach, FLTHE TOWN
One of the nicest surfing towns along the east coast of Florida has to be Atlantic Beach in Jacksonville. Besides being full of great restaurants and awesome architecture, Atlantic Beach has some fantastic beaches. This particular beach is located on 7th street. I chose this location because of it’s ample parking at Bull Memorial Park, available restroom in the community center and short walk to the guarded beach.
THE BEACH
General characteristics of the beaches in NE Florida are flat, hard-packed, sand and fun waves and water that isn’t as blue and clear as the water in southern Florida. The water is darker because of the proximity to the St. John’s river and all the tributaries to the north and is very clean despite it’s appearance. The water is warm most of the year but becomes chilly in the winter months (Nov-March).
LIFEGUARDS
Lifeguards are on duty from 10am until 5pm daily (5:30pm on weekends) and patrol the beaches from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend. This is a nice benefit since the waves and currents can become strong at times.
Atlantic Beach has a small-town feel, doesn’t have high-rise condo’s and typically, isn’t as crowded as Jacksonville Beach to the south. That’s what makes it so appealing. Make sure to visit charming, Atlantic Beach if you’re in the Jacksonville area — it’s a great lazy location!
