Regardless of weather or restrictions, you can still travel while staying at home. All you need is access to this amazing technology.

OCULUS QUEST

The first thing you’ll need in order to travel while staying at home is access to a VR headset. The best one on the market is the Oculus Quest 2. This amazing device allows you to have a full 360 degree, spherical view of whatever you’re watching. In the case of travel, it’s likely a tropical beach, snow-capped mountain or a romantic Italian village. The Oculus Quest 2 makes all of this possible at a very affordable price of $299.

OCULUS APPS

In order to enjoy Oculus VR Travel, you’ll need to download the proper apps. Within the Oculus system you’ll find stand-alone travel apps as well as an Oculus-owned app callled “Oculus TV”. You’ll want to explore all of these and determine which ones are best for you. My suggestion is to check out “Wander” ($10 stand alone app) and browse the videos on Oculus TV.  The videos on Oculus TV are free. Pay particular attention to the categories of “Discover Immersive Creators”, “Travel During the Pandemic” and “Quiet and Solitude”. These categories will provide you with hours of immersive travel content.

OCULUS TV SEARCH

Unfortunately, as of the time of this post, searching for a specific channel, video or destination isn’t available within Oculus TV. However, that will likely change very soon. Regardless, there’s still plenty of content to keep you busy in its current environment.

LAZY LOCATIONS

Lazy Locations has over 50 videos on Oculus TV. The videos focus on beautiful Florida and Bahamas beaches as well as outstanding boating locations. All my locations are filmed in 360, immersive video allowing them to be viewed on the Oculus Quest 2.

NAVIGATION EXAMPLE

The following is a video showing how to access Oculus TV on the Oculus Quest. Since then, the Oculus Quest 2 has been introduced. It’s a much better headset and one I’d recommend buying. Regardless, the process for navigating is the same. In this video, I focus on watching my “Lazy Locations” videos but the process is the same for any video in Oculus TV.

AMAZING ADVANCEMENT

It’s amazing to me just how quickly the technology has improved over a short period of time. Just think, two years ago one had to pay $500+ for a good VR headset and most headsets required the use of a phone (i.e. Google Cardboard). The first prototype VR headset was created only in 2010 and the first Oculus Rift was created in 2014. Facebook acquired Oculus in 2016 and has been responsible for its explosive advancement since. What’s even more shocking are some of the capabilities that are yet to come.

THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL IS INCREDIBLY IMMERSIVE

EXCITING FUTURE

When I attended OC 6 (and Facebook Connect this year) I got a glimpse into the future of what awaits. The technology is amazing. In the not-so-distant future we’ll see extraordinary resolution, more comfortable headsets, and incredible capabilities. For example, you could virtually go to your best friends house and watch a live football game on their tv. Each of you will appear exactly like you do (i.e. whatever you’re wearing) and communicate and make gestures in real time. That could also mean joining friends at a live concert or visiting a tropical beach together.
